Ok, today I've ran these calculations based on a simple break even formula I worked up for the purpose. And the results are staggering. Ready? After investing in a LED bulb, you may break even in less then 8 months. After which, you will pocket the profits for up to 7 years. How is that for a gain?
But, using the same formula I also ran calculations for a future point in an existing trend as power prices rise and LED costs drop. Now, as this occurs as we speak, you stand to gain more benefit by declining break-even time to around 2 months at some point.
After that I became curious and ran a thorough cost calculation based on my equation. And the results were even more staggering.
So, haven't we overlooked something...?
Well, what about less tangible benefits, such as quality of enjoyment, you would be hard pressed to put a price on; - like significantly less heat at the light source? Very well, actually that too, can have a price label -- just a lot harder to calculate. Why is this?
Your current regular bulb uses power to make 80-90% heat and at perfect 15% light. That energy needs to be vented. And on a hot day, that ACTUALLY gives your air-conditioning bill. It's basically hard to know exactly. But if you look again at the differences in energy efficiency between a LED replacement bulb and a regular bulb, you see a quantity of 97% percent. (That's actually a noteworthy average.)
